Topic Proposal: Kuantan's Fishing Village at Tanjung Api

I would like to propose the fishing village of Tanjung Api, Kuantan, to be my subject matter of my visual narrative assignment. Tanjung Api is located at the very river head of Pahang River. Kuantan, or Teruntum, before it was named, started as a fishing village along this river head. Kuantan is believe to have been settled in the Malay continent for a millenium, and was once ruled by Chih-Tu, Siam and even the famous Melaka Empire. Founded in 1850's, the settlers of Tanjung Api continued fishing there until today. They caught fish both from the river and the sea. Fish captured were sold in the local market.

However, due to Lynas, all this fisherman may lose their job soon due to the toxic waste that are poured into the river that channeled from Gebeng, Pahang, 25km north of Kuantan. The Lynas operation will ruin the long tradtion of Tanjung Api fishing. The refinery will discharge 12,300m3 of waste water everyday. The sea water will be contaminated and radioactive rain will harm the entire Kuantan settlers, livestock, and plantation.

The aim of this project is to record down the tradition and the builder of Kuantan, the Tanjung Api's fisherman before it vanishes from the map of Malaysia.
